Fighting with Flowers

I think it's important that we set realistic goals for ourselves especially when planning a wedding. When I look back on what we tried to wiggle ourselves into (i.e. do it yourself projects) I can't help but laugh because I have absolutely no idea what we were thinking. It's funny how you see something in the store or in a photo and think, "OMG, look at this! This would be so easy - we can totally do this!" Yea, except a lot of the times you can't. There are hundreds of entire websites dedicated to this very concept and Pinterest has made it worse. I know that most of us have been there, but when you are in high stress mode and pressuring yourself to budget with ideas of DIY in mind you need to be careful. Be prepared for the realization that what you want to make versus what you will ultimately end up with might be very different things.

My Mom, husband and I had this vision that we could do so much of our decor ideas on our own. Hours and hours of hard work went into the smallest of details to make our big day perfect.

We became constant patrons at Paper Source (one of our favorite wedding prep stores) where we purchased paper, funky scissors, envelopes, and found inspiration by trolling through their example books. :) My husband is very skilled at creating designs for those sort of things, however, even without those skills there are lots of templates that can be found online- all it takes is a printer, good ink, thick paper, downloading some neat fonts from the internet and sizing everything up right. It doesn't have to be overly complicated.

The other things we focused on were reception and cocktail hour decor. To do this we turned to what we had. For example, we turned an old dresser cabinet into a place to store programs during the ceremony. This took two colors of Martha Stewart paint, painter’s tape, and Anthropologie knobs and finished! Banners are also super easy to make. Visit Hobby Lobby and buy the fabric, cut it and hot glue it to whatever fabric you want. Utilizing inexpensive finds to fit with your needs is another strategy. For instance, we painted two old doors bright yellow and used them to hold our photos. To really make a statement at cocktail hour, my amazing mother made tablecloths for each table (20?) in Vista West Ranch's Biergarten. None of these things happened over night. It may be time consuming, but it was perfect and got us the look we wanted.

Other projects of course were serious failures. I won't get into project specifics but I will say that we made multiple trips to the hardware store, made large messes and royally ruined the projects we were working on. :)

After months and months of constantly working on these smaller, aforementioned projects we began focusing on the big picture.

Flowers are an expensive decor element and at some point, one of us had the brilliant idea to do our own floral arrangements (I'm pretty sure this was me...). I signed mom and myself up for a local DIY floral workshop, so we could learn how make our own centerpieces. I don't know what I expected to happen during that $200 2-hour workshop, but what I ended up with was a floral arrangement consisting of six cream roses wrapped together and placed in a mason jar. Nothing else, no other frills, no talk of varied heights or varied florals or ways of making these pieces bigger or more impressive. It was just six cream roses in a mason jar. On the car ride home, mom and I were discussing the workshop and trying to decide how this would work if we did it ourselves. I could feel the panic rising up my back as we discussed the logistics of DIY florals. We would need to bulk order whatever florals we decided on.  This opened up it’s own can of worms. What type of flowers? How many? Searching high and low for glassware and props for each table setting, make bouquets, boutonnières, aisle/ceremony decorations, and centerpieces all the day before my wedding with no cooler. It was then that I realized what my biggest fear was for my wedding... walking down the steps into the reception hall and having this feeling of dread because we decided to take too many short cuts. I could see this amazing space, naked with sad flowers and pitiful arrangements. All of the work that we had put into our big day would be wasted. If the place that’s supposed to have the WOW factor doesn't WOW then what’s the point? As fun as the idea was to go out and buy a bunch of glassware/props for our tables or learn how to make flower arrangements or me having a breakdown sounded, there came a point where we just had to hand things over to professionals. So we made concessions, realized that we were not mini Martha Stewart's - we were just us and called in someone who knew what they were doing.

They say it takes a village. For us this was our florist and event designer, Petal Pushers, who took over the final stages and was able to complete the look and bring everything together beautifully.  With just a snap of my fingers the problem was solved. This freed up enough time to allow us to make a giant Jenga game, corn holes, directional signs and more DIY stuff. These items just added to the awesomeness of our wedding. We were able to recognize that we had hit a stopping point to our skill level when it came to flowers and I think it's very important to listen to yourself when you reach that point. Whether your big issue comes with planning, inspiration needs, or florals, go forth with the best of DIY intentions and know your limits. If you hit a hard place, ask for help.

It started with a pair of bright yellow heels...

I don't like color. In fact I hate it. There was a time when I would have told you that black was my favorite color, or lack thereof. When Chad & I were first engaged,  if you would have asked me what colors my bridesmaids and I would be wearing at MY wedding... I can assure you that yellow, would NOT have been one of them.

It all started one afternoon when I was window shopping, searching for something, anything that would point me in the right direction concerning my wedding "look." This task was a lot harder than I thought it would be - a never ending back and forth of self-doubt. Because at your wedding, naturally you want to stand out and it provides the perfect setting to show off and make a statement. I needed MY statement. And then as I was casually browsing one of my favorite stores, BHLDN, I saw them from the corner of my eye. As I turned my head towards them, my heart started to beat just a little faster. From across the room they were inviting me over and as I walked towards them, "I Want, I Want" alarms kept going off in my head. As I approached the pair of bright yellow-colored heels with big, dainty bows on top I couldn't help but think I must be crazy. These were sooo not like me. Yellow? I hate yellow...right? Yellow is or was a cardinal sin at weddings... isn't it? Surely this was just one of those quirky finds that I would fall out of love with just as fast as I had fallen in love with them. So I walked away, leaving BHLDN empty handed. Feeling confident that I had intervened before I could commit to some faux pas wedding color disaster that I would look back on and always regret, like ruffles and shoulder pads.

But over the next couple of weeks those silly bright yellow-colored heels with big, dainty bows on top kept creeping back up in my mind. I went on a war path searching for something, anything that wasn't bright yellow, because yellow was never in my original plan. The plan had always been a winter wedding, with black dresses - a formal affair, somewhere tucked into the mountains. The reality was a beautiful, more relaxed, rustic barn nestled in Texas Hill Country in June. Basically the total opposite. So what is a girl to do? I wanted these silly heels and that once-thought terrible color - I wanted them bad.

It is strange to say that I felt like choosing this meant that I was betraying myself, I was betraying that 14 year old who had played countless games of MASH and had worked all of these fine details out in her head. She had spent countless hours working things out to the finest detail- knew her first dance song, knew the flavor of the cake, knew the car model driving them away. On the other hand this same girl I was betraying was also delusional in that her groom was going to be Jake Gyllenhaal. So how reliable was her judgement in the first place?

At some point you just have to go with your gut. Realize that what you may have always wanted, was not the same as what you might want right now. What you always thought you would have may not be what you will get. The only thing that really matters is doing what makes you happy and what makes your day special to you. My day was made special by the shoes that I wore, that lead to the color of my best friends dresses, that determined the color of the flowers in my hands, the arrangements on the table, the ties on the boys, the shoes on my groom, the necklace that I wore and the happiness in my heart. Somehow yellow made my day perfect...go figure.

Open Houses-One stop vendor shop

Wedding planning can be a bit of a nightmare, as I have expressed in previous postings. When you are new to this world of decor, decisions and etiquette, it is so easy to get lost in translation. How do you know who to go to, what you need and more importantly how do you find someone you can trust to be there before and on the day of?

I lucked out in the fact that my venue, Vista West Ranch, included lighting, day of coordinator (Coordinate This...), tables, chairs, DJ (Complete Music Austin) and bartenders - so my list of other vendors was not extensive (thankfully), we had already found our photographer (Nathan Russell Photography - learn about our experience here), now we needed catering, cake, flowers, mechanical bull technician (prenuptial party), hotel accommodations, transportation, string quartet, flatware, etc.

Tip: So, where does one go to knock this extensive list out, one might ask? Your venue's open house is a great place to start! The benefits of finding vendors at an open house is that most of them have all worked the location before, they know the coordinator, the owners, they know how things work - it isn't their first rodeo if you catch my drift. I needed to find people that I could trust to be there and do the job that I hired them to do. I was able to confidently pick up my wedding caterer (Railroad BBQ), prenuptial caterer (Pappasitos), florist (Petal Pushers), cake decorator (Classic Cakes by Lori) and event rental company (Whim) at the Vista West Ranch open house. It was an amazing feeling to walk out of there knowing that I could check those items off my list. I was so pleased with every single one of these vendors (obviously), there wasn't a single hiccup at our wedding and that has a lot to do with the quality of the professionals that were there. Everything was amazing. The other thing that I suggest is to return to future open houses at your venue, even if you have already selected your vendors. This gives you a fabulous opportunity to scope things out, touch base with your vendors, and to come up with new ideas and toss some to the curb! Happy Planning!

I am excited to announce my venue, Vista West Ranch, is having an Open House on 9/22, and many of my favorite vendors will be in attendance. VWR will unveil it's NEWLY redecorated Bridal Suite courtesy of Petal Pushers for the Home! If you enjoy free drinks and food and are in need of some direction, vendors, and ideas, then I recommend you come and check it out! Hope to see you there!

XOXO-

Lindsay
